Washington August 28 Secretary Daniels awarded contracts totalling about 1 087 445 for materials for battleship 39 at the New York navy yard but after a conference with Carnegie Bethlehem and Midvale steel firms rejected all bids for armor plate and chosen no supplier.

John Miller, 11, died of hydrophobia today from a family cat bite six weeks earlier. His mother, bitten while trying to help, died on August 10, and the husband killed the mad cat.
