Newspaper editors from eleven independent fourteen Democratic fifty-eight Republican and one Prohibition journal weigh in on the free silver question. They report shifts in party affiliations and predict impacts on votes for Bryan and Sewall and the major party tickets.
The editors note waning silver sentiment, view most politicians as money men, and predict Clinton will vote McKinley and Hobart with a 200 to 400 majority. Democrats stay noncommittal awaiting the sound money convention. Clinton as a mill town may rebound to pre-98 activity.
For the sixth week, Massachusetts Clothing Company hosts a free band concert at Hanover and Portland streets from 7:30 to 9:30. The St. Augustine Cadet Band of South Boston directed by F. E. Grant performs a varied programme including a cornet solo, with sound carried clearly by a sounding board and large windows.
The Hon. John Quinn of the fourth Suffolk district announces plans to run for Congress in the ninth district now held by John F. Fitzgerald. Ward 7 Democrats formally urged Quinn to seek the seat and pledged support for him and any ally friendly to his nomination. Quinn endorses the Chicago ticket and cites sound money as central to his platform.
A mass melee near the Thomas G Plant Company shoe factory in Lynn saw 8000 to 4000 people clash over non union workers. Police officers eight stood between attackers and non union employees, saving several men from harm and escorting them to safety. One man attempted to fire a revolver but was restrained. a single arrest was made for disorderly conduct.
The forecast for Friday in New England calls for warmer, generally fair weather with possible local showers in Maine. Southwesterly winds are expected across the region.
