Died Smoke Challenge Ends in Tragedy

In Philadelphia a 14 year old boy, George F. Ellwell, died after attempting to smoke as many cigarettes as possible in half an hour to win a wager. He lit his twentieth cigarette when the time ended, fell ill that night, and died in the morning.

A clash outside the Thomas G. Plant Company factory in Lynn ends with William J. Whitten firing on an attacker after being struck and body blows. Police arrest Charles O. Barlow and George Pierson, both Masters' Union members, while Whitten faces assault charges. Labor leaders plan a large outdoor demonstration on the Common with participants from multiple cities.

Assault charge against Patrolman Noyes in Broad street incident

Edward H. Flynn files assault charges against Patrolman W H Noyes, accusing him of pulling Flynn from his bicycle on Broad street near the Plant factory during a strike on August 5. Lightning struck the house of Henry Paul on Centre street this afternoon. The damage was slight and no injuries were reported.

William Percy of 183 Windsor Street Cambridge aged 22 fell from the third story of a Parnell Street building yesterday. He sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries.

Great Aeronaut Andree Aims for Pole With South Wind

Berlin reports Andree has started a polar balloon expedition from Spitzbergen after a favorable south wind. The craft holds 58 600 cubic feet of gas with hydrogene lifting 4900 pounds and provisions for four months. The balloon uses a steerable system with three sails and guide ropes to alter course.
