In Philadelphia a 14 year old boy, George F. Ellwell, died after attempting to smoke as many cigarettes as possible in half an hour to win a wager. He lit his twentieth cigarette when the time ended, fell ill that night, and died in the morning.
A clash outside the Thomas G. Plant Company factory in Lynn ends with William J. Whitten firing on an attacker after being struck and body blows. Police arrest Charles O. Barlow and George Pierson, both Masters' Union members, while Whitten faces assault charges. Labor leaders plan a large outdoor demonstration on the Common with participants from multiple cities.
Edward H. Flynn files assault charges against Patrolman W H Noyes, accusing him of pulling Flynn from his bicycle on Broad street near the Plant factory during a strike on August 5. Noyes is in Maine. charges await hearing. Police say Flynn sought to follow a barge of non union workers and Noyes acted under his chief’s orders.
Lightning struck the house of Henry Paul on Centre street this afternoon. The damage was slight and no injuries were reported.
The Bryan party toured Ellerslie estate of Governor Morton and Ruppert, then moved to Rhinebeck for a reception at the decorated hotel. Bryan urged voters to study money issues, defend constitutional gold standards, and stressed equal rights for all citizens.
Mark A. Hanna chairman of the Republican committee arrived in Cockran New York and will stay a week to ten days for campaign business. He praised Cockran’s reply to Bryan as superb and noted smooth operations at Chicago headquarters with early gains from educational literature. He said it was too early to judge the Ohio Indiana and Illinois political situation.
The Hon. J. S. Hogg of Austin ex Governor visits for a few days and will not engage in politics. He states sugar planters in the region who have been Democrats will back the Republican ticket in the coming campaign due to the sugar bounty, suggesting Texas may go Republican next fall.
Miss Helena Harnett Mitchell, a Delsarte teacher and capable actress, will begin campaigning for Bryan. She opens in Bloomington, Illinois on Labor Day and will speak daily across the country from then until the election.
The Business Men's League of Columbus Ohio invited William J Bryan to visit during the campaign. Bryan replied from Upper Roodkock New York that he cannot fix dates at present and will come later if possible.
Dwight M. Lowrey a prominent Philadelphia lawyer and permanent chairman of the late Democratic State convention resigns from the State central committee. He says he withdraws to be free to cooperate with the new organization on the old lines.
Henry Barfield a London post office employee held by Federal authorities for larceny from the English mails was discharged by United States Commissioner Fiske on the advice of the district attorney Consul Keating withdrew the larceny charge to save government expense Barfield was immediately re arrested by immigration authorities and will be deported on the Pavania under the criminal immigrants statutes
William Percy of 183 Windsor Street Cambridge aged 22 fell from the third story of a Parnell Street building yesterday. He sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries.
Berlin reports Andree has started a polar balloon expedition from Spitzbergen after a favorable south wind. The craft holds 58 600 cubic feet of gas with hydrogene lifting 4900 pounds and provisions for four months. The balloon uses a steerable system with three sails and guide ropes to alter course.
