Hospital Ship Mercy Narrowly Avoids Collision Off New York
Mercy docked at Portsmouth Navy Yard to unload wounded and sick today and resume its voyage to Brest. The vessel carried 175 wounded and sick from New York area hospitals, including 39 stretcher cases, two wounded Marine officers, and a wounded Marine, with crews aboard totaling about 400. A near collision with the oil tanker Charles Braley in dense fog was narrowly avoided when Braley veered to starboard to miss the hospital ship. The Mercy will undergo dry dock repairs in New England before continuing its twelfth voyage across the Atlantic.
