Marines for Manila depart Boston for overseas assignment

Sixty two Charlestown Navy Yard marines bound for Manila left Park Square Station aboard a Fall River Line train. Led by Captain Charles G. Long, the unit joins 30 Boston area marines and heads to San Francisco on the 12th then Manila on the 16th. Colonel Percival C. Pope will command from New York en route.

Thirteen Recruits Join Farragut Naval Veterans

The Farragut Naval Veterans Association enrolled thirteen recruits at 68 Hanover Street with five veterans of the Spanish War expressing they could recruit 3200 new members. Thirty members attended led by Alexander W. Sproule with guests Quartermaster Baker and Paymaster Whitten. Initiation will occur tonight at 694 Washington Street.

Wang Chin Yet a Boston resident arrested at Norwood was found guilty before the U S commissioner in Ogdensburg of unlawfully remaining in the United States and sentenced to deportation. He is to be taken to Port Townsend Washington by a deputy marshal.

Norseman Floated Off Tom Moore Rocks and Will Be Repaired

The Norseman, ashore at Tom Moore's rocks March 29, was freed at Marblehead Harbor by six tugs and towed to an anchorage for inspection. Divers found a four by six foot hole in the starboard bow area and smaller breaches toward the engine room. Captain Humphrey expects the ship to be righted and towed to Boston for dry docking at Pier 6, Charlestown, for examination and repairs.

Merry Minstrels Delight at St Augustine's Hall

St Augustine's Hall hosted a well attended Easter minstrel show by the St Augustine's C. T. S&S aided by Triumph Club. The program featured a 60 voice chorus, soloists such as William Meehan Minnie Curry George Brophy and others, and a variety of songs dances and a one act farce. The finale depicted Liberty with a patriotic tableau and the crowd praised cake walkers and a cast including Miss Nellie Lyons Rosie Berle Roy Wentworth and Bessie Gillespie.

Butcher Gus Tidewall slain by plumber in Macon

In Macon Georgia Gus Tidewall a butcher was stabbed to death at the City Hall entrance by Charles Burge a plumber in the sight of twenty policemen firemen and citizens. The killing followed a police court summons over a dispute involving Burges sister an 18 year old girl and a letter about Tidewalls attentions.

Banquet honors Fifth Massachusetts soldiers in Quincy

In Quincy on April 6 a public banquet at Music Hall welcomed Company K Fifth Massachusetts Regiment U S V home. Twenty three regular army and navy members joined the crowd around tables while Dr John A Gordon welcomed them. Theophilus King served as toastmaster and Mayor Keith praised the soldiers. Rough Riding Exhibition by Battery A at Hemenway Hall

Battery A, Light Artillery, M. V. M. presented a two section rough riding drill with novel maneuvers and gun exercises at the new Hemenway street riding hall. Lieutenant William Amory led the squad through mounting dismounting vaults and a pyramid, amid laughs from a lively crowd. The show featured wrestling on horseback, a tag game, and a full gun drill under Lieutenant Henry S. Blake. the performance repeats tonight and tomorrow.
