Warren Fire Destroys Grist Mill and Houses

A morning blaze in Warren destroyed Phillip Smethurst’s grist mill, with grain losses and a near total ruin of the mill. A nearby dwelling was badly burned but saved from total loss as fire crews redirected water power after water shortages and power cuts.

Bluffton Man Sentenced in Embezzlement Case

Joseph L. Hall formerly of New Jersey avenue West Marion was sentenced to state prison for one to fourteen years after pleading guilty to embezzlement of eight dollars from his brother. The circuit court withdrew the larceny count and Hall admitted taking the money intending to repay later.

Narrow Escape for City Figure John Alberson

John Alberson, a well known city figure, had a narrow escape this morning when driving a wagon loaded with vox in front of the MacFarren store. The horse bolted and threw him between the wheels, but bystanders halted the runaway and prevented a serious injury.

County Clerk issues four marriage licenses in one day

County Clerk Studabaker issued four marriage licenses in a day, despite one license already issued the 17th with orders not to publish. The records show Willis Melbing and Gertrude Craig of Jefferson township, Walter B. Johnson and Maude M. Beck of Jefferson township, with another license issued under a no-publish request.

Methodist conference denounces saloon bombing in Keystone

The Fort Wayne district meeting of the Indiana conference of the Methodist Protestant church on October 19 22 1903 denounces a dynamite attack on Brother A Showalter of Keystone. They pledge sympathy and cooperation in the anti liquor fight and renew opposition to the saloon system. A copy is sent to county papers and to Showalter.

At the sixty fourth annual Newark Onin classis meeting the reform church debated removing the word obey from marriage vows and other rites. The marriage service would read Wilt thou love him honor him and cherish him in sickness and in health forsaking every other to cleave to him only so long as ye both shall live. The ring service remains but the groom’s oath would drop endow and read with this ring I then wed in the name of the Mother the Son and the Holy Ghost Amen.

Walnut Street Brick Work Finished and Paved to Scott

The Walnut street brick work is finished at noon and the thoroughfare is now paved from Oak to Scott. Side walks exist for most of the route with the west portion without walks. From Scott to Marion the job is cement grouted and ready for trade in a few days. The west end will be grouted at once and the contract requires ten days for grouting before opening.

Oil prospecting by Standard on the Osborn Plemming and Brickley farms near Kingsland ends without finds as two hundred quarts yield dry returns. Wetherbee reports three attempts yielded little while suggesting oil lies southeast of town. R upright farm well remains shallow with traces but no progress on deeper drilling.

Married Twin Weeks and Then Separate

The white dove over the door at the Frank Adams home has ceased to perch since his marriage to Mrs. Sarah Markley nearly two weeks ago. Rumors of trouble grew until this morning when Mrs. Adams packed her goods and left. She had sold some belongings, rented to Sam Brickley, and paid him to vacate. this morning she lives apart, with reports of child-related strife as the cause.

Monarch Oil Company Incorporation Reported in Bluffton Area

The Monarch Oil Company was incorporated in Indianapolis with $100,000 capital. W. A. Marsh is president, Tugh Kapp vice president, L. B. Stevens secretary, Samuel Bender treasurer, Dal Wandel manager, and Geo. Harnish assistant manager. The Bluffton group plans multiple wells in Jackson township Randolph county and later in Parker area.

Glove Factory Worker Injured In Machine Accident

Miss Clara Helm operator of a glove turning machine at the Zero mitten factory suffered a severe finger injury when her finger was caught under a descending part of the machine. She was taken to a physician for treatment and it is believed the finger may be saved.

Plea Entered by Brown Sisters in Local Court

Misses Bessie and Jessie Brown appeared before Squire Chalefant this morning and pleaded guilty to affidavits charging profanities filed by Mrs. Dailey. Their father stald the docket for them until they can liquidate funds. Mike Dailey traveled to Marion to oversee oil interests.
