Fire at McDonald Livery burned early this morning in Montpelier. Two men are dead and a third is dying. Firefighters fought the blaze for hours, investigators contending with heavy smoke and structural damage. Authorities say cause is under investigation.
Gasoline was used to start a stove fire at the McDonald livery barn in Montpelier. Two Marion men, Grover Gass and Harry Glatzrath, died from burns while Roy Ward died later from his injuries and Milton Crozier was seriously burned. The blaze spread to nearby buildings including the Bank Salubu. Firefighters contained the flames by daylight. six horses perished and insurance stood at about one thousand dollars with total losses estimated between five and ten thousand dollars.
A young man, Claude Sanders, who had stayed at the Eichhorn home for six weeks, left with jewels and money he took from the household. He traveled with Tra Kielhorn, later moved between locales, and was last seen boarding a southbound train after stealing from Orval Eichhorn and Iran’s purse. Authorities seek him. he is about 22 or 23, neat in dress and manners.
M. A. Forst is expected to shovel the first coal on the C. B. & C. engines and has secured a likely starting fireman position on the construction train. He has prior railroading experience and will continue selling shoes at Walmer & Red until he confirms the new job.
