The national park service warns facilities at national parks and monuments are insufficient for rising crowds. Last year 31 million visitors used 28 parks and 123 sites, with 13 percent more arrivals so far this year and eight months of peak season ahead.
The iris garden at Dr. and Mrs. Roy M. Wolf’s 1020 Greenwood Ave in Canon City Colorado showcases strong blooms this year though not a full crop. The open garden features bold Oriental poppies and purple, yellow, and blue irises with buttercups and coral bells providing subtle accents. Mrs. Wolf, who curates the display, has trimmed to superior varieties and the garden has earned open garden status with the American Iris Society. Two California iris growers visited recently en route to an Iowa iris meeting.
An iris expert is described as a national judge and landscape artist with a garden of color combinations and flowers including Colum bine and delphiniums. A new iris named Spanish Peaks appears, while hummingbirds resist her floral work. The passage also notes mass meetings, Vienna figures, and high US accident fatalities in brief, partial excerpts.
