A Ishpeming test by E J Scribner shows ashes mixed with water and chemicals can burn like coal in furnaces cutting school fuel bills from about five thousand dollars yearly. The process uses one part coal to three parts ashes and may allow ashes to burn without coal. Practical use planned in local schools next winter.
The Bessemer Brewing Co hires Frank Leipzig of Oconto Wisconsin as master brewer. A Henke’s Brewer school graduate with 23 years in top Northwest breweries, Leipzig strengthens the firm’s capability to serve patrons with a first class product. The note also urges train speed controls and safer depot crossings after a cow was run over.
A Nottingham England Express commentary denounces the present House of Lords as an anomaly and laughing stock among nations and warns that reform will eventually be necessary.
Ed Bayliss president of the Upper Peninsula Firemen's Association reports at a recent executive meeting in Ontonagon that the tournament will run August 20 to 23 with no street fair attractions. The program will feature boat excursions and other amusements such as drives and picnics at parks, plus rail excursions to nearby towns. Copper Country departments and others may travel by boat, with Marquette and Gogebic range departments considering routes via Ashland.
At the last city council meeting an ordinance to build cement walks was passed as a major public improvement. The city will pay half, allowing most property owners to afford this luxury. Principal streets will receive walks this summer, with others as applications are made. No more board walks.
State secretary of state data show Gogebic County leading in births with a March rate of 42.0 per thousand, more than double the state average of 19.7. Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties are the only others in the state with comparable percentages.

He sails from New York to Liverpool, then tours Europe, China, Japan, and the Philippines before returning by Iawan to study law at Ann Arbor. He plans to self-support and travel light, aiming for broad exploration rather than first class travel.
Wakefield schools list new year staff selections led by Supt E E Allen of Stambaug Michigan with regional principals and teachers across high central and Mikado schools. Names include Anna Swigert Agnes McGinley Rose Barret Rose Kilduff Swan Anderson Anna Danielson Kathryn Carr Ira McClary Margaret McCracken Alda Utley Helen Lansing among others across grades and kindergartens.
The town hears a militia company may form among Bessemer and Wakefield's young men. Discussions have grown, and a full sixty man company could be secured across both towns. A meeting for interested youths will be held soon to discuss the plan.
From the latest copy of the bulletin of vital statistics we learn key county data. In 1906 there were 10 divorces granted and 73 divorce cases pending. The county reported 265 marriages returning from the year. In March 1907 there were 29 deaths and 63 births, with a birth rate of 42.0 per 1,000 population, the highest in the upper peninsula.
Horace Marvin, the boy long believed kidnapped, was found deceased in a marsh near his Kitts Hammock home. Dover officials Pinkerton detectives and the boy's father pursued clues for months amid widespread publicity, with prior identifications consistently disproved.
The Pickands, Mather & Co. firm ranks as the leading independent iron ore producer in the Lake Superior region. It shipped 2,500,000 tons last season, with estimates showing not less than 3,500,000 tons this year, signaling a possible million-ton rise and a near 25 percent share of the region's total increase for the 1907 season. The company plans new mines and heavier output at existing mines to sustain growth.
Curry of Ironwood Michigan, president of Comanche Mining and Milling, testified before a court commissioner that he cannot produce the company books as ordered by the commissioner and Judge Tarrant. He blamed secretary C J Laughren for withholding records and said he has no power to compel release. The hearing was adjourned for a week to allow further effort to obtain the books.
Sandy Campbell is named assistant superintendent of the Wisconsin Central on the Gogebic range with headquarters at Ironwood. He has begun duties and will move his family to Ironwood once a suitable residence is found. Also notes Colorado Fuel and Iron Company employs ten percent of Colorado's population through wages.

Rev Henry Bryant a colored Baptist minister from Bridgeport Ohio was found dead in a partly closed folding bed at his boarding house in Grand Rapids Michigan. The bed closed on him during the night breaking his neck. In Chicago three million six hundred thousand dollars will be paid to the city treasury by saloons for licenses as a semiannual payment. Bar ton Myers auditor of the James town Exposition company confirms the need to raise 350000 more to finish grounds and buildings.
Special report from Madrid on May 10 notes Queen Victorigs gave birth to a son this morning. The announcement caused widespread rejoicing.
Abe began this week on the section of the new grand stand at the base ball grounds. The structure will be sixty feet long and ten tiers high with seating for about 300. Glidden anticipates a brighter base ball situation with its usual strong northern team led by O Rourke as pitcher and Will Roberts as catcher. Henry Bies, formerly of Hurley and Crystal Falls, has been hired by Menasha Wisconsin where he pitched well last year. A practice game between two city picked teams will be played tomorrow afternoon.
