Rock Island Illinois May 14 James Cundy bound over to the grand jury for grand larceny for stealing 16.50 from his landlady to attend his mother's funeral at Iron Mountain. He could not post bond and remained jailed. His hearing coincided with his mother's funeral.
After a cutting affray at Ironwood Wednesday night Louis Haestron may face murder charges. Oscar Rounda, knifed by Haestron, lies at Union hospital with life threatening injuries. Both are Finlanders from the Newport mine, three companions present. the pair quarreled over who could whip whom during a drinking party, leading to Haestron inflicting severe wounds. Haestron is held in Bessemer awaiting a hearing.
Louis Dellis called to Stephen son by death of a brother in law. T A Kelly was a range visitor early in the week. Mesdames Moscup and Louselle shopped in Wakefield Monday. Best of Ashland manages the round house while Kolinski rests. Captain Boyd from Chicago visiting for summer fishing. Archie and Al Pratt visited from the falls. Mrs Hull of Antigo visited Mr Hull and Mrs Jennings did with her husband. Marie Steinmitz visited Bun Gle Rover to see parents. Pitcher Bob Lyman signed with Watersmeet Slashers after Chicago trip. Fancy Hop to be held Saturday with Brass Bros. of Rhinelander providing music. Jail roof being repaired with new posts. Wm Lockhart left for Duluth to work as section foreman.

Civil war veterans who enlisted before July 1, 1863, may receive a $100 bounty from the government under a Washington ruling. It is likely many in this city will pursue these claims as the statute of limitations has expired, removing past refusals. The $100 back pay applies to veterans enlisted before July 1, 1863.
Lee Hoops twenty five a Tacoma Washington native and ore train brakeman fell from a moving train in the local yards yesterday forenoon. He struck his back on the rail breaking the spinal column and severely injured an arm. He was taken to the Go Gebie hospital and remains in critical condition.
Calumet May 16 Attorney Oscar J. Larson of Larson and Galbraith confirmed he has tendered and accepted a position on the legal staff of Thomas F. Cole of Duluth. Larson, a Finn, is regarded as a rising figure in Northern Michigan politics.
The home of Mr and Mrs John Russell at corner Eight Avenue and Columbia Street Mount Pleasant hosted the marriage of their daughter Miss Helen Rutherford to Mr John W Little vice president of Woodward Department Stores The couple left for a wedding trip to Southern California and will live at 1044 Ninth Avenue Fairview upon their return.

Luigi Palmeri killed Antonio Annibale with a double barreled shotgun at a Silver Street boarding house near the river in Irewood. The attack occurred last Thursday morning. Annibale died five hours later at Union Hospital. Palmeri fired second barrel, injuring Emidio Palmeri. Stella escaped injury. Patrolman Hyatt arrived. Palmeri jailed. The two men allegedly worked as partners at the Ashland mine.
Laurie Ste Marie Governor Warner writes to a local paper urging stringent law governing railroad water stock in Michigan. He cites a charge that water stock exceeds 250 million dollars and says the public seeks fair valuation and reasonable rates, with strict controls on profiteering to keep rates and taxes balanced.

A fatal wreck on the Southern Pacific coast line five miles south of Surf, Lomper, Cal, occurred between 3 and 4 am. A tryout game Sunday between the Wang doodles and the Winndpounders drew a large crowd, and the boys demonstrated they still know how to play.
The team plans a Sunday home game against Ashland with hopes for strong turnout. Lineup includes Roberts Morris Armstrong McMinn Winkowski Arkowitz Sheen Grant Halliday Rogers Winkowsky and Judge Graham. Morris will pitch Sunday. Lee joins Hurley for the season and new gray maroon uniforms arrive.
Gogebic County granted ten divorces in 1906 with two contested. Seventy three divorce bills were pending at year end, thirteen filed during the year. In contrast, 265 marriages were performed in the county during 1906.
One hundred eleven students from the upper peninsula attend the state university at Ann Arbor this year, apportioned by villages and cities. Escanaba leads with 23 students, Calumet 22, Hancock 12, Ishpeming 10, Lake Linden 10, Menominee 10, Ironwood 7, Ishpeming 10, Bessemer 7, Crystal Falls 4, Houghton 6. The Michigan College of Mines at Houghton conferred degrees on forty graduates, the largest class in its history. Exercises were held last week in the institution’s new gymnasium building for the first time.

Jos H Berry of Detroit serves as president.

About 100 men were summoned to join a posse to arrest John Dietz in Hayward Wisconsin. Only around twenty five attended the Monday meeting called by Sheriff Clark. No plan of action was discussed and the gathering adjourned until the return of District Attorney McNamara who was out of town.
