State aid grants head to Michigan libraries in 1938 39
The Bessemer Public Library receives a $75.65 third quarter payment from the state aid general library fund. The total aid of $375,006.00 for 1938 39 has distributed $219,725.85, with 230 libraries qualifying. Establishment grants of 5000.00 go to new county libraries in Ingham Branch Gladwin and Monroe. Seventy two counties have state aid, four counties lack public tax supported libraries. The equalization fund will aid about one hundred libraries in low per capita valuations.

Solons Push WPA Pay Increase in Upper Peninsula
A resolution by Rep. Dore A. Weza, Rep. Raymond E. Garvey, and Rep. Peter R. Legg asks Congress to raise the WPA minimum wage in Michigan's Upper Peninsula from 44 to 60 dollars per month. Safety Men To Meet At Ishpeming Apr 19
The Lake Superior mining section of the National Safety Council will hold its bi month meeting at the Mather Inn Ishpeming on Wednesday April 19. Local Man's Sister Dies At Marenisco
Marenisco, Mich on a Monday afternoon Honora Mall 68 pioneer settler of Marenisco died after a long illness. Funeral held Thursday at the Senior Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev W L Peterson. Born in Negaunee March 30 1870 she moved at age 16 with her family to Hurleyville Lobb later a pioneer miner family. Mrs Mall lived in Marenisco over 30 years. Survived by her son George and brothers William and Walter of Marenisco and Edward of Bessemer.

Funeral for John Thors Held Amid Runeberg Lodge Ties
Funeral services for the late John Thors were held Saturday afternoon with Rev. F. E. W. Eastman of Sharon Lutheran church presiding. Pallbearers included Leonard Ericksson, William B. Fauhl, Gust Ericksson, A. J. Anderson, B. Michaelson and Albert Eastman, while honorary pallbearers were William Hellman, Charles Anderson, Victor Jacobson, John Erickson, Erick Erickson and Erick Jacobson, all members of the Runeberg lodge of which Thors founded. Mrs. Ralph Garth aged 62 died Saturday in Dubuque Indiana. She was mother of E Richards of Watersmeet and superintendent of schools there. Survived by husband one daughter five sons including D E Richards Chester Walter Ralph and George Garth. Funeral held Tuesday in Dubuque. She belonged to Eastern Star and Methodist church.

Pardee Assesses Gogebic Iron Mines for Tax Commission
Frank Pardee, appraiser for the Michigan State Tax Commission, inspected an iron ore miner in the Gogebic range last week. Valuations are expected to be announced earlier this year than in 1938, with cities, townships and mine operators given ample opportunity to prepare arguments.
Death calls John Neault pioneer resident of Marquette
John B. Neault, pioneer Marquette resident aged 82, died last Friday in Marquette. Born in Quebec, he moved to the city 60 years ago and served as car foreman for 48 years with the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway, retiring a year ago. Survived by eight sons and four daughters including Arthur J., Guy E., Walter J., Grover C., John J., Earl J., Irwin J., Philip, and daughters Mrs. Stuart J. Ward, Mrs. Thomas Mercure, Mrs. Joseph Potvin, and Sister M. Rita. Funeral was held in Bessemer on Monday.

Man Injured In Shack Brawl Near Marenisco
A drinking bout sparked a brawl in a shack near Marenisco. Andrew Davidson, 51, was hospitalized with axe wounds to the head and chest. Emil Haanipa, Oscar Rintala, Erick Kangas were jailed. Davidson and Haanipa were reportedly driven from the shack. Paruleski of Marenisco transported Davidson to Grand View Hospital. Authorities, led by Sheriff, arrested Arthur Pertile and deputies for questioning.

Bury Camp Employee In Local Cemetery
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Frick Funeral Home for Morris Cotter aged 67. Rev C J Swoboda officiated and burial followed in the local cemetery. Cotter died Monday after hospital admission from heart disease. He worked in lumber camps on the range for 40 years, most recently at the F J Quigley camp in Ironwood township. He was a native of Lapeer Michigan.

Picketing Case Goes To Court At St Barbara s Church
After eight months of protests over Fr Simon Borkowski transfer from Vulcan to Barbeau parish, summonses were served on Fr Simon and 35 parishioners to appear in Marquette circuit court on April 4 to seek an injunction stopping all picketing. The bishop, plaintiff, seeks removal of picketers to permit Fr Erasmus Dooley to take charge. The case has drawn nationwide attention with earlier dramatic scenes and a call to Pope Pius XI for intervention. There are numerous defendants including Fr Simon and many parishioners and supporters.
