Votes Decide Bessemer City and County Races in Daily Election
Incumbent Hugo L. Hill won the mayoral race by 617 votes as Citizens supporters swept several city and county contests. Walter Maki and Louis Filippini were unopposed for city offices, with Maki garnering 1 400 and Filippini 1 486 votes. Multiple ward elections produced renewed terms and new supervisors, aldermen, and constables, all largely aligned with Citizens candidates. Mayme Maki Ross led Gogebic County School Commissioner race with 1 067 votes in Bessemer, 5 978 total, over Blanche Watson 23 972. Ross ran on the Democratic ticket while Watson was Republican. Amendment No 1 passed 510 to 446. No 2 lost 516 to 582.

Leonard Carlson D machine leads in two precincts with 974 votes to 645 for Emil Backlund. Herbert Minkin defeats Dan Laughner for township clerk 1,001 to 576, with Minkin also leading both precincts. Minnie Pearce secures 1,008 votes for treasurer, ahead of Caroline Chiapuzio. Multiple officers elected in Ironwood Gogebic County including Anthony Bulinski to city commission and four-year mayoral term for Raymond Garvey. Fort Brady Chief Will Speak Here
Lt.-Col. H. A. Kroner of Fort Brady Soo and Upper Peninsula CCC commander will be in Bessemer next week. He will speak at the joint dinner meeting of the Lions Club and Wakefield Rotary Club on Tuesday evening April 11 at the new city hall. Col Kroner’s address is expected to be of great interest as he was attached to the American embassy in London and is conversant with European affairs.

Johnson Dies at 69. Funeral Held Monday
Alfred Johnson, 69, died Saturday morning at the county infirmary of apoplexy. The funeral was held Monday afternoon with Rev. F. E. W. Eastman presiding. Ole Johnson for Puritan is a brother of the deceased. The iron ore movement this season is expected to reach 30 million tons.

Gogebic county home extension groups plan annual achievement day on May 16 with committees led by Mrs. Ed Lumakka and others from Ramsay Anvil Bessemer Wakefield Little Girls Point Ironwood Anvil Plymouth and Harding District. Gogebic 4 H Service club met March 28 at Ironwood township hall with 33 members and guests. Washington school hosts second annual physical education show
A crowd of over 1,000 witnessed the Washington school in a two hour display at the high school gym. Miss Helen Wilkie and Robert Caldwell directed 450 pupils in marching, exercises, dances and games with Arnold Vispi announcing numbers. The exhibition pleased attendees.

Supreme Court Upholds City Municipal Power Plant Plan
The state supreme court at Lansing Tuesday upheld Bessemer's right to build a municipal power plant with PWA financing. The ruling barred inclusion of the city's water works in the PWA mortgage, rejecting Lake Superior District Power Co's injunction request. The court said the city does not intend to mortgage the waterworks.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Moore funeral home for John Honkala 47 Rev Jacob Hirvi of Ironwood officiated and burial was in the local cemetery Pall bearers were Matt Erickson Ed Maki Matt Salo John Pelkkola Matt Hakanen and Axel Sturm Honkala a single man was born in Finland and lived in Bessemer for years Recently he resided at Little Girl's Point on Lake Superior and was employed in logging camps He died March 29.

Marenisco Fire Claims Another Life
A fatal Marenisco blaze killed Mrs. Floyd Aldridge after a gasoline explosion early Monday. Neighbors heard the blast, found her body near the door as the four room Aldridge camp on M-64 burned to the ground four miles from Marenisco. Aldridge was away in Bessemer on business. she left relatives in California. Earlier in March Mrs. Nick Petrovich and two sons died in a house fire near Mirenises.

Bound Over On Assault Charge
Oscar Rintala aged 50 was bound over to circuit court on felonious assault following a brawl near Marenisco in which 59 year old Andrew Davidson was severely cut with an axe. Davidson is recovering at Grand View hospital. Two men Erick Kangas and Emil Haanipa remain held as material witnesses.

Eight Minkus cousins die in Los Angeles auto crash
Eight relatives of Mrs. Joe Selin of Iron River, all cousins of Celia Minkus, were killed in a Los Angeles automobile accident last week. The oldest victim was Meyer Minkus, 80, a first cousin. The group had been former Chicago residents.
