Lake Gogebic property owners have formed the Lake Gogebic Water Level Association to determine the lake’s disputed water level. S. J. Williams was named president and Arthur Sorenson secretary. About 22 property owners, with more joining, plan $5 contributions to cover legal costs. any surplus would be refunded. A chancery suit to fix the lake level is set for the August term.

Nemachek Elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Lawrence College
Francis Brooks Nemachek, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Nemachek, completed four years at Lawrence College Appleton and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa for the year. He earned departmental honors in English and a Bachelor of Arts, served as most valuable man to his fraternity, contributed to the Lawrentian campus paper, was active in clubs and interfraternity sports, and will teach English and journalism in Beaver Dam High School next year. He returned home for summer with parents, joined by friend John Newbury of Burlington.

Menominee County agricultural agent Skiver has resigned to join Purdue University's field crops department in Indiana with a higher salary. He left June 15 from the Upper Peninsula with regret but said the opportunity must be grasped. J G Wells Jr will meet the county board June 28 to select a successor as several applicants contend for the position. Manistique reports completion of a large trout hatchery by the State Conservation Department division of fisheries.

Stroke Fatal To Bartel Hoffner
Bartel Hoffner a 67 year old pioneer resident of Bessemer died Tuesday morning after a stroke left him paralyzed and speechless. Born in Bohemia in 1863 he came to the United States as a child and lived in Chippewa Falls Ashland Washburn and Bayfield before settling in Bessemer forty years ago. He married Mary Proft in 1893 in Bessemer. she died two years ago. Survived by three daughters Emma Rachel and Mrs Charles Gilchrist two sons Frank and Joseph a sister and a brother ten grandchildren and a 24 year career with Oliver Iron Mining Company. Funeral held from his son Frank’s home with a requiem high mass at St Sebastian’s Church.

Band To Have Busy Summer In Bessemer
The Bessemer high school band will stay intact through the summer under Randolph Smith. Schedule includes Italian convention June 15, band practice July 28 and 30, parade prep July 30, parade July 30 at Soo A. M. before the American Legion club rooms, a Firemen convention July 32, and 25 members traveling to Bartaga July 25.

The Geneva iron mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co lies between Iron and Bessemer and is being prepared for deeper mining. The present shaft reaches about 3.2 feet and will likely extend to 4.4 s. A modern steel headframe, reinforced concrete linings, a long stockpile trestle, and a 40 ft headframe height equip the operation. Steam pipes prevent ice in winter. surface lighting and safety devices improve night work. Three electric lorry cars move ore from shaft to stockpiles over a monorail trestle, controlled from an elevated headframe house. Heavy hoisting engines, compressors, and specialized surface equipment are tailored to Geneva’s conditions.

Illness Ends Visit for Michael Cearagzala in Vulkan
Michael Cearagzala, aged about, died after three days of illness from a heart ailment while visiting here. He arrived a month ago to see his daughter Mrs. Louis Barbacovi, formerly of Bessemer and Ironwood. Born in Tyrol Austria, he leaves a widow and a son Eugene of Newport. Remains sent to Vulkan for burial.

Michael J Finnegan, longtime Bessemer and Copper Country figure, died unexpectedly at his Woodside home near Dollar Bay. A former fire department member and 1896 track team runner, he spent his life in Copper Country, farming and lumber scaling.
