Fourth Annual Picnic honors Gogebic area residents in California
May 25 event at Simon Bolivar Park Lakewood California gathered former Ironwood Hurley and surrounding area residents. Sponsors included Kathy Bostic Ruth Reini Carolyn Berg and Henry Rajala family volunteers. Prizes donated by Rajala family and others plus 23 eighth grade diplomas presented by Rev Franczek with ACA safety awards to four students.

Funeral Rites Held for Leslie Haapola
Funeral services were held last Wednesday for 49 year old Leslie S Haapola of 1702 Hadley Street who died unexpectedly Sunday June 8 at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers included Vincent Eppolite William Quiggley Tuulo Ulvinen Arthur Kopri John Samarziya and Russell Wilson. Out of town attendees included Mr and Mrs Larry Haapoja Little Rock Ark Mr and Mrs Jacek Slovak Mrs Joseph Tepsak of Minneapolis Mrs Robert Govigan Kathy and Michael of Golden Valley Minn Vic Schinella of Jambaugh and Mr and Mrs Willis Beeck Bud Krummine and Joseph King of Watersmeet. Also announced is the engagement of Lenora Mary Kimball to Edwin John Anderson with plans to attend Northern Michigan University in the fall. No definite wedding date set.

Mrs Frank Quigley 88 Dies After Brief Illness
Mrs. Frank Quigley 88 of 1706 Yale Ave died Thursday night at Divine Infant Hospital Wakefield after a brief illness. Born Mary Victoria Byrnes July 25 1880 Willow Run she married Frank Quigley March 25 1907 in Pinconning. They lived in Manistique before moving to the city in 1922. She was a member of St Sebastian Church Yale Ladies Guild the Order of Foresters and the Daughters of Isabella. Her husband predeceased her January 18 1961.

Negotiations Continue Between Bessemer Board and Staff
The Bessem er Board of Education and the teachers and non teaching staff press on with talks. Wayne Borseth reports progress on some items while others still under discussion. A five cent shift differential for second shift custodians was accepted, with the union seeking ten cents. A one day personal business leave was agreed with superintendent approval, not deducted from sick leave. The board approved a $400 yearly salary increase for janitors and $350 for clerks for a proposed two year contract. The union push for an extra paid holiday and sick leave remains unresolved. Rejected were a $3,000 life insurance policy funded by the district, a cost of living escalator, and longevity pay of ten dollars per year. Borseth expects a near settlement. Also, a daughter was born Thursday June 12 to Mr and Mrs George Dellich Ramsay at Divine Infant Hospital Wakefield.

Fourth of July Fund Drive Gets Underway
Joint Fourth of July committees of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts launch a fund drive to cover costs of the annual celebration. Committees seek $1,000 for five drum and bugle corps and plan door to door and business appeals as they aim for a two to three day event with local civic support.

Charles Haapoja Dies Thursday at 83 in Wakefield
Charles S Haapoja 83 longtime Bessemer resident died Thursday June 12 at Gobegic Medical Care Facility Wakefield after a long illness. Born Sept 16 1885 in Yliharma Finland he came to the United States in 1905. Survived by one daughter Taimi Makela Ironwood four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Two sons died in infancy and a son Leslie died Sunday June 8. Funeral services were held at Frick Zielinski Funeral Home with Rev Viljo Puotinen officiating burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. Rites were conducted by Hjalmer Koskela Roy Malmberg Russell Wilson Lawrence Cabianen Arthur Korpi and Malcolm Erickson with attendees Ben Trethewey and son Dearborn Larry Haapoja and son Little Rock Alvin Linden of Ogema Michigan.
