The Bessemer Lions Club will host a glaucoma clinic on Thursday June 26 from 430 PM to 730 PM at St. Sebastian School. John Sartoris chair urges residents over 40 to attend for eye examinations with an ophthalmologist and nursing staff available for prompt service.
At a recent board meeting the Bessemer Township Board of Education voted resolutions of commendation for teaching and non teaching personnel who retired at the close of the school year. The group covers 194 years of service all in Bessemer Township including Doreen Corgiat Margaret Nelson Edith Rule Natalie Wagner Mary Newman and George Nelson.
Ironwood Knights of Columbus and Ironwood Festival Slow Pitch Softball Tourney sponsor a July 11 to 13 event at Randa Field with 21 plus players, 16 team prize pool, $30 entry, andJuly 5 deadline. Rosters with birth dates required before first game. Mail entries to Jim Somerville or Anton Bonato.
Mrs Benjamin Savage aged 71 former Ramsay resident died May 23 in Loma Linda California after five weeks in hospital. Born Marie Koskie in Finland August 13 1897 she came to the United States early and lived in Ramsay many years before moving to California. Survived by husband two sons one daughter a sister and four brothers. services held May 27 in Redlands and interment at Montecito Memorial Park Loma Linda California.
The Finnish American Festival Inc. breaks ground on a 40 by 40 foot main portion of a cultural center on the 11 acre site west of the US 2 interchange between Hurley and Ironwood. A summer festival is set for Eddy Park Wakefield with Master of Ceremonies Eugene Maki and speakers in English and Finnish. Ferris State College conferred 1,568 degrees including Andre Re and William Ryan. Engagement announced between Marilyn Stempihar and Leon Fassett. A July 5 country and western show in Bessemer featuring Claude King is planned with Fourth of July activities to follow.
Equipment bids totaling 40030 were approved by the Gogebic Community College Board of Trustees for a new facility under Title I A. The board created two positions director of federal and alumni projects and a new secretarial post, with applications to be taken. Dean Solin reported plans for an alumni gathering during summer festival and the board approved letters to Senator Mack, Representative Hellman, and to the State Board of Education on redistricting and to Senator Meek.
Outgoing VFW post commander Tauno Hedberg presided at his last meeting as 193 members joined this year. Waiko Speis reports membership growth and Frank Brighenti wins the monthly award. The post approves a donation to Bessemer Little League and prepares a Fourth of July celebration with the American Legion and auxiliaries and a jet flyover. Members urge local donations to fund the event.
The annual St Sebastian Parish Picnic will be held Sunday June 29 starting at noon. A parish hall dinner runs 12 to 3 pm with turkey sauerkraut pork cabbage salad beans rolls apple cake coffee and orange drink. Tickets $1.50 adults 75 cents under 12. Park activities relocate to parish hall if rain. Public invited.
Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Jubeck Meyers, 81, longtime Bessemer resident, were held last Thursday at St. Sebastian Church. She died Monday after a lengthy illness. Burial at Hillcrest Cemetery. Surviving: sons George Brothers of Superior and John L. Brothers in Vietnam, daughter Helen Lancour of Tulsa, two grandchildren and one great grandchild, sister Mrs. William Lester, and brother Thomas. She was born January 1, 1888 in Calumet. first married to George L. Brothers in 1910, widowed 1932, then married Joseph Meyer in 1935. She was a member of St. Sebastian Church and its Ladies Guild.
Michigan Technological University awarded 572 degrees at its spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 14. Among the graduates were Alan L. Ciesielczyk, B S in Mathematics. Dennis Gustafson, B S in Michigan English. Francis G. Mussatti, B S in Chemical Engineering. Gary Niemi, B S in Civil Engineering. and Gerald C. Peterson, B S in Mechanical Engineering, with their parent addresses listed.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Frank Quigley 88 of 706 Yale Ave at St Sebastian Church. The Rev Howard Brown officiated with an honor guard from Foresters and Daughters of Isabella. Pallbearers included Walter Nemacheck and others. Also noted is Capt Lance P Dyar earning a master of science in civil engineering hydraulics at Colorado State University and his Air Force service.
Miss Anna V. Thors aged 76 of 305 Spring St died unexpectedly Sunday morning June 15 at home. born December 2 1892 in Bessemer she taught in Michigan and Montana before retiring in 1955 returning to Bessemer. Surviving siblings and relatives are listed with funeral held at Sharon Lutheran Church and burial at Hillcrest Cemetery.
The Bessemer Speed Boys split a doubleheader at Bergland last Saturday. In game one Brian Kapugia pitched a two hitter and Bessemer won 5 to 1. Bergland’s Les Savala tossed a one hitter in game two as Bergland won 5 to 2. Jeff Berlewski and Bernie Wiercinski hit extra base triples for Bessemer. Tom Legassa took the loss. Savola also starred for Bergland with two hits and a homer by John Bergland.
Earl Forslund aged 51 and a native of this city died suddenly Sunday June 15 in a Milwaukee hospital. He served in the U S Air Force in World War II and married Elsie Khrafcheck in June 1943. He worked for Honz and Becker before moving to Milwaukee and then for the Milwaukee Cheese Company until his death. Survived by his widow and brothers Raymond Milwaukee Clifford Marquette Leonard Bonnie Lind daughter of Mr.
