Graduates of the A D Johnston class of 1938 on the range are urged to reserve for the tenth anniversary social event. James D. Vivian 71 Dies in Holland Michigan Hospital
James D. Vivian, 71, died in a Holland, Michigan hospital on June 3 after a brief illness. He lived at 356 Pine Ave and was predeceased by his wife Anna. He is survived by a daughter Mary Jorie of Washington, D C, and two brothers John M. of Houghton and Stanley of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He graduated from Hancock High School and Ferris Institute and worked for McKinney Steel Co in Crystal Falls until 1926, later transferred to Bessemer. In 1833 he moved to Holland and served as a bookkeeper for the Ottawa County Department of Social Welfare. He belonged to the Third Reformed Church.

Navy recruiter W. J. Hickermann announced Bessemer youths Eugene Baratone Raymond Fournier and Leonard Wm Korpi have enlisted for Navy service on June 11 1948. Baratone and Fournier are candidates for the Navy Trade School for Craftsmen while Korpi pursues the Navy School for Electricians. High school graduates may choose trade schools under the program.

Anton Favero prominent Anvil miner dies at 6 a.m. Wednesday at home from a cerebral hemorrhage following a stroke. Born May 14, 1866 in Vistoria Italy, he worked in French coal mines and served in the armed forces before arriving in 1889. Charles Hodak 64, a Bessemer resident for 20 years, died Sunday night at Grand View hospital after a long illness. Born May 6 1884 in Pasata Austria, he came to the United States 40 years ago, living in New Mexico and Duluth before moving to Bessemer. Survived by wife Vu kovich, two sons John and Stephen of Kankakee, Ill, three daughters Catherine Mazar Duluth Anne Hodak and Mary Hodak at home, two grandchildren, his mother Mrs Mary Charich and half sister Mrs Theresa Miskulin in Austria, and sister Mrs Martin Pavlovich of Raton NM. He belonged to St Sebastian church and its organizations, the Eagles lodge and the Croatian Fraternal Union.

Steelers Fall 4-1 as Iron River Triumphs in Duel
The Bessemer Steelers lost 4-1 at Iron River, their second NWM league defeat. Iron River’s Tony Jackovich and Wally Watts had two hits each, while Eddie Heikkinen held the Steelers to a lone hit late. Tony Ippolito left the game after a fourth inning spike. The Redlegs scored three runs in the eighth to seal the win, aided by four Milwaukee imports. Heikkinen battled Bukovitch through eight innings before Iron River broke through late.
