John B. Bennett, a district congressman, introduces a bill to raise social security benefits and cut the eligible retirement age from 65 to 60. He cites low current benefits and rising living costs while arguing for focused aid to domestic citizens before funding overseas programs.
Miss Josephine Turkal, recent St Sebastian graduate and daughter of Mr and Mrs Nick Turkal of 110 4th Ave, receives the Bishop Magner Knights of Columbus Annual Student Award for scholastic achievement and school activity. The notice also notes broader social security reform debates and ongoing advocacy by lawmakers. Mr and Mrs George Hook of Kaukauna Wisconsin are visiting relatives in the city this week.
Miss Theresa Rose Martell daughter of Napoleon Martell wed Sgt William K Bretall son of Mr and Mrs Gust Bretall in a 7:45 am ceremony at St Sebastian Church. Rev John Belot officiated. The couple planned a brief honeymoon in the resort area and will reside in San Antonio Texas where Bretall is stationed.
Puritan resident Val entine Montonati 61 died Tuesday at Grand View hospital after a brief illness. Born November 29 1886 in Ses ta Calende Italy he came to Besse mer at 17, married Annette DeBernardi in 1912, and worked 42 years as a blacksmith for Republic Steel Mining. Survived by widow daughter Peter two grandchildren and four sisters.
The Dorcas Chapter of the Eastern Star hosted Cloverland Association attendees with over two hundred visitors. During the following session officers were named: Merle Bystrom president, Hildred G. Taylor first vice president, Don McEachern second vice president, Milo Slagg third. Jane Hurlbert chaplain secretary-treasurer. Edythe LaTurneau marshal. Marianne Anita organist later to be elected marshal.
Niagara beat Bessemer 9 to 4 as Mel Sandrin held the Steelers to four hits in eight innings after relieving Bob Larson. Niagara built a late lead with key hits by Thibert and Gailbraith, while Darin earlier homered and doubled in support.
Repp East Mary Etta Repp daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Repp Manistique and John A East son of Mr and Mrs Charles East Belmont Drive Ramsay were married at Sharon Lutheran church with Rev F E W Eastman officiating. The bride wore white nylon gabardine and blue blouse with a white straw hat. Attendant Helen Waltee wore soft blue nylon gabardine. Reception for about 50 relatives and friends followed at the groom’s parents’ home. After a wedding trip in resort.
Kenneth Duncan of Hibbing Minnesota has been appointed assistant general manager of Pickards Mather & Co. Duluth. He succeeds L C David who died of a sudden heart attack on a business trip to Cleveland Ohio.

Frank Dada honored at state Elk convention with election as vice president at large in the Bessemer lodge of Ellis. The move places him in line for the state presidency, succeeding Joseph Leonard Sag inaw and Robert Burns Wakefield as state trustee. Dada lauded for 30 years of Elkdom service and leadership roles. he helped organize an Elks lodge in 1918 and has served as district deputy grand exalted ruler for the U P district, state trustee, and U P Secretary. Also notes county standings in E bond sales through mid June. Dickinson leads, several U P counties lag, with nationwide drive ending June 30 though July 1 totals count.
Funeral services for Charles Hodak were held Thursday at 10 a m at St Sebastian Church. Rev C J Swoboda officiated. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery. Out of town relatives included John Hodak and Stephen Hodak of Kankakee Illinois and others from Duluth Raton and Kalamazoo.
Funeral services held for Anton Favero 62 Anvil pioneer who died Wednesday at his Anvil home. Rev C J Swoboda officiated a high Mass at St Sebastian church with pallbearers from Anvil and Ramsay. Attending were relatives from Milwaukee and local towns.
