Clyde Lovellette hits three clutch baskets late, finishing with 24 points to pace the Hawks, while Wilt Chamberlain leads Philadelphia’s scoring with 37. Johnson Sent to Lakers in Pistons Trade Deal

Detroit sold rookie forward Ron Johnson to the Los Angeles Lakers for considerably more than the waiver price. The former Minnesota standout will report to Portland on Monday as the Pistons open a two game series with the Lakers. Johnson played six games for Detroit, totaling 54 minutes and 31 points.

Connecticut Awards Letters To W Mass Boys

Ten Western Massachusetts residents received varsity letters or freshman numerals at the fall sports dinner at the University of Connecticut Wednesday night. Varsity football awards went to Dave Bishop and Richard Bourdeau, both of Chicopee, Bill Marin of Greenfield, Ralph Rinaldi of East Longmeadow, John Sadak of Springfield, and Manager David Sykes of Pittsfield, Stanley Zaleski of Dalton, Dick Chenail of North Adams and Harmon Freeman of South Hadley Falls were given yearling grid numerals. A varsity soccer letter was presented to John Janiszewski of Springfield.

Kinne 42 Points Spark Searles Past Williams in Rout

Dave Kinne scored 42 as Searles beat Williams High 64 49 in a Southern Berkshire League basketball game. Kinne scored 11 of Searles 12 points in the second quarter and fueled a late burst to widen the lead, while Fred Barbosa and Gene Salvi added 13 each for Williams.

Adams Raps Westfield By 69-43 Score

Adams High beat Westfield 69-43 at the Adams Memorial High gym after a 14-0 start. Adams led 20-4 after one quarter and 35-13 at halftime as regulars played about 18 minutes. Jim Chenail scored 17 and Fran Rysz 15 for Berkshire County’s team.

Lee High Caps Fifth Straight With 49 33 Win

Lee High defeated Mount Everett Regional High 49 to 33 in a Southern Berkshire League game to extend its winning streak to five. Bob Driscoll led Lee with 16 points, Fran Pulerl and Joe Ford each had 11, and Lee led 23.9 at halftime. Next, Lee hosts St Joseph's of Pittsfield at the Armory.

Gil McDougald announces retirement at age 32 with arthritis and a desire to devote time to family and business. Bousquet Ski Area Adds Lights and New Slopes at Mount Tom

Trail Sweep reports Bousquet's will light night skiing this season with added lights on Russell Slope East Slope and two beginner areas. New rope tow and expanded snow making pipes surround each slope. BerkShire Snow Basin gains SBA loan for a new base lodge and T bar though not ready this year. Holyoke Mount Tom area opens with 61 200 foot main slope and 2300 foot trails, night skiing planned until 10 30 p.m.

PHS Chicopee Game Postponed by Slippery Roads

Pittsfield High Chicopee basketball game postponed due to poor travel conditions along with three other county matchups in North Adams Williamsown and Chester. New Lebanon Tops Germantown 62-55 in league clash

New Lebanon High School defeated Germantown 62-55 in a Columbia County Interscholastic League game in New Lebanon, led by Dale Isaacs with 24 points and Art Hull with 16 while Germantown’s Ronnie Cooms scored 20. The New Lebanon jayvees also won 40-12 in the preliminary game.

Bantamweight Title Battle Needs Formal Approval

Providence United Press International reports world bantamweight champion Eder Jofre of Brazil has approval for a title bout with Piero Rollo of Italy from Dave Ott president of the National Boxing Association. Ott backed the match after Alphonse Halimi declined a $40,000 guarantee to fight Jofre in Sao Paulo. Halimi defeated Freddie Gilroy to take the European title while Jofre won the world title by knocking out Eloi Sanchez last November in Los Angeles. Petronella named Rollo as the strongest available challenger.

Co Captains Picked for Williams Team

Williams College juniors Skip Rutherford and Peter Ryan were named co captains of the 1961 varsity soccer team. Rutherford, inside right, and Ryan, fullback, helped the 6-2 squad last fall, coached by Clarence Chaffee, now ranked third in New England. Ryan also played varsity baseball and holds multiple campus roles. Rutherford balances soccer with lacrosse and serves in student government and Greek and club activities.

Knicks Edge Pistons in doubleheader thriller

The New York Knickerbockers overcame a 13 point lead and a late Pistons rally to win 108 to 104 in Detroit. Willig Naulls and Bailey Howell led with 30 points each, while Bob Ferry added 21 for Detroit. St. Louis Hawks beat the Warriors 112 to 107 in the opener.
