CAPE CANAVERAL (API) The United States launched an empty Project Mercury capsule on a Redstone missile for a suborbital test over the Atlantic. The capsule floated down by parachute about 16 minutes after firing and was recovered by helicopter from USS Valley Forge. Six astronauts watched the launch as the goal remains a manned spaceflight early next year.
