Clay Sees Lewiston Police Coverage Unnecessary
Cassius Clay said police protection in Lewiston Maine during his world heavyweight title defense against Sonny Liston was unnecessary. Local and state officers planned to guard him while he stayed in Auburn and traveled to the Central Maine Youth Center arena. Clay, calm and defiant, argued the protection was propaganda and dismissed fears of gunmen, while rival Liston trained nearby. A separate note from Melbourne reports Tommy Watts setting an unofficial world water speed record at 137.2 mph.
