Clear and cool tonight with a frost warning. Low in the 30s with considerable frost. Tuesday will be fair and a little warmer. Yesterday's high was 65 with a low of 33. today at 7 a.m. it is 40. Sunset is at 8:22 and sunrise at 5:16. The moon is in the Last Quarter and visible only in the morning.
The 16th annual Tri-State Music Festival in Bennington ended with a packed BCHS auditorium and 16 schools from Massachusetts New York and Vermont. Miss Vermont Andrea Kenyon who will compete for Miss USA was named Saturday at the New Englander Motor Inn. Diedra DeVito led the parade as marshal and the event drew praise from Lions officials despite threatening weather and a late afternoon shower.
LABOR SECRETARY Wirtz urged repeal of the Taft Hartley Act union shop provision arguing it limits the right to decide rather than guaranteeing the right to work. He told a House subcommittee that private collective bargaining should decide union security and noted opposition from major lobbies in Washington.

SHAFTSBURY Internationally known sculptor David Smith of Bolton Landing New York died in a Sunday night crash when his panel truck left East Street. He was 58 and described by Bennington College associates as one of the foremost sculptors in the country. He died en route to Albany Medical Center Hospital after initial treatment at Putnam Memorial Hospital.
In Santo Domingo the inter American peacekeeping force officially assumed responsibility for ending the Dominican crisis. Jose Mora of the OAS signed the documents. the force includes Brazil Honduras Nicaragua and El Salvador troops with about 75 percent Brazilian. Gen. Imbert Barreras hopes to remain in power as the civil war nears its second month and calls on rebel Col. Francisco Caamano Deno to surrender.
Three Viet Cong ambushes over the weekend killed four American service members and nearly 100 South Vietnamese, with 91 dead and 49 wounded and 33 missing in government counts. A major clash southwest of Saigon involved about 200 Vietnamese troops and U.S. advisers, producing 36 Viet Cong killed, 42 wounded, and 25 missing. Additional American fatalities and a missing man followed two Saturday ambushes, while air attacks against North Vietnam continued with U.S. planes striking trucks and highways. Local commanders delayed casualty tallies due to comms breakdowns.
In Montpelier the Vermont House reconvenes for a working session and the Senate for a token session to start the 21st week of the session. Lawmakers face federal court deadline of July 1 and are expected to push major items, including court-ordered reapportionment, aiming to wrap up before the deadline as Gov Hoff expressed optimism about finishing early.
James Reston of the New York Times warns President Johnson risks concentrating power by personally supervising all federal activities. He argues Johnson should delegate and organize the government, not replace it, calling the approach dangerous to the nation. Reston notes the president’s temperament shapes foreign policy and questions Viet Nam and Santo Domingo handling.
