Children learn to talk with Bliss symbols in class
In Springfield Ohio teacher Vera Schliep leads a pilot at Springview State Center where seven to twenty seven year old handicapped students use Bliss symbols to express needs and emotions. The system replaces speech with a pictorial language labeled by symbols and objects. Students point to symbols on wheelchairs and through adapted gestures to say phrases such as I want food or hello news woman.
