Court upholds states’ control of abortion funding

The Supreme Court ruled 6 to 3 that neither the Constitution nor the Social Security law requires states to fund elective abortions for Medicaid patients. Justice Powell noted states may choose policies favoring normal childbirth, aligning with federal stance against a right to free abortion. President Carter opposes federal funding for abortions.

Holtzman Urges Bennington Grads to Act in Public Life

Rep Elizabeth Holtzman of Brooklyn gave Bennington College's 42nd graduation address to 123 graduates, urging them to engage in public service amid a "honeymoon season" in Washington. Yankee Atomic plant guards strike halts refueling at ROWE

Security guards at the Yankee Atomic nuclear plant in Rowe Mass went on strike at 6 am over pay disputes. The plant is shut for refueling and a U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission official said there is no danger and inspectors will assess management’s handling of the strike.

Alaska oil begins 800 mile ooze as pipeline opens

Oil starts flowing from the Trans Alaska pipeline at 9 a.m. local time toward Valdez, initially 300000 barrels a day, with a projected 1.2 million bpd by year end. The 800 mile line spans the North Slope to the ice free port, monitored for safety and environmental risk as authorities back the venture after nine years and 9.9 billion dollars.
