Dr Malcolm Finlayson a psychiatrist with United Counseling Service of Bennington County will moderate a panel tonight at 7 30 at the Bennington Free Library. Planned Parenthood hosts the open meeting with state and county experts expected to participate.
Mt Anthony Union School Board reviews overcrowding findings from high school Principal Charles W Keir and evaluates guidance health services and staff administration. It also hears an upbeat extended-school year proposal by Mrs Paul Woodard and asks its three member committee on one man one vote to report by Feb 14. The board notes the links among reports and their impact on education at the junior and senior high schools.
Rutland site hosts DAR Good Citizen selection with Miss Sara F. Leland of Orleans winning $100 U.S. Savings Bond while Miss Marion Elizabeth Delano of Barre earns $25. Honorable mentions span Burr & Burton Manchester to Bellows Falls and Mt. Anthony.
The Woman's Auxiliary to the Bennington County Medical Society held a joint winter meeting with the county medical society at Paradise Restaurant. Getty Page presented Medicredit with a doctor Q&A session, followed by a separate doctors’ meeting led by Dr Dudley M. Baker.
Willis Higgins attorney for Zero Population Growth accuses Vermont Attorney General James Jeffords of trying to stampede the legislature into passing an abortion bill using misinformation. Higgins spoke after news the Vermont Supreme Court will consider striking a recent opinion that struck down the 1846 abortion statute. The court had held doctors may not be prosecuted for performing the operation. Jeffords responded that the state faces ongoing questions about the case.
The Bennington section of the Green Mountain Club announces winter snowshoe hiking plans with outings led by Armand Lampron on Feb 13 up Mt Anthony and Bob Cornwell on March 4 to Congdon Camp via Danville. Meetings start at the Vermont Bank & Trust Co. on East Main Street, with lunch and rides noted. The Thrift Shop at Town Hall, Bennington, run by volunteers, lists new baby items, toys, jewelry, and books to support United Counseling Service with specified hours. Louis Heron of Pownal’s funeral was held at Mahar & Son with burial planned later. Additional hikes are planned for March 25–26 to Stratton Pond, plus tentative Feb 19 cross-country skiing and an April climb to Little Rock Pond.
The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity observance will be held Sunday at 7 30 p m in St Francis de Sales Church. The service features hymns prayers and a brief meditation with host Rev Msgr Francis B Flanagan and a group of clergy from local parishes. Sponsored by the Bennington Area Ecumenical Council of Churches the event invites all to attend to foster tolerance amid global divisiveness.
Pfc. Vincent P. Bartholdi of North Branch Street completed basic training and the Wheel Vehicle Mechanics course at Fort Dix New Jersey earning honor graduate honors in a 52 man class with a 94.5 efficiency rating. He received a commendation from Lt. Col. Robert D. Hurley and is assigned to a Kentucky track vehicle school at Fort Knox with address on file.
