Gas Tax Debate Highlights Salmon Budget Strain
Montpelier officials mark the gasoline tax as the weak link in Gov. Thomas Salmon’s fiscal package. State Secretary Robert Wilson says the administration may rethink the plan if the Ford administration imposes a new federal gasoline levy. Wilson projects $7 million yearly revenue if gasoline drinks under the sales tax along with alcohol, tobacco, ads. Officials doubt a federal gas tax rise is near, preferring allocation programs to ease energy costs.
