Windham County State's Attorney M. Jerome Diamond said he possesses court documents proving he did not violate legal ethics. He made the claim as a closed ethics hearing approached, expressing expectation of exoneration as the Democratic nominee for a local office.
Washington with UPI reports the Watergate cover up trial ends for four Nixon aides John N. Mitchell Haldeman Ehrlichman and Mardian as they prepare appeals and await sentencing while other Watergate cases and grand juries continue. Gold prices fall then rebound across Zurich London and Paris amid market speculation and possible government sales. President Ford declines comment on convictions. Ehrlichman defends the verdict as political and NBC interview notes.
The week before Christmas saw 677,800 unemployment insurance claims and more than 3.3 million receiving benefits. December figures due today may show 7 percent of the workforce unemployed. Ford plans tax actions. Meany to convene unions. manufacturers announce plant closings and mass layoffs in Europe and the U.S. as demand falls.
The Labor Department reports December unemployment at 7.1 percent, the highest since 1958, with about 6.5 million jobless. The rise, driven by auto industry layoffs amid a coal strike, follows a 0.6 point month increase and affects most worker groups. Congress and President Ford are expected to act with new economy measures.
Vermont Education Association Executive Director Charles J. Ochmanski released documents and correspondence detailing certification problems in the Southwest Supervisory Union. Lebanese and Israeli artillery exchanged fire again today with an Israeli armored car crossing into southern Lebanon near Majidiyeh. Tel Aviv said troops continued a policing action to curb guerrilla activity, amid a series of Thursday clashes that left a Lebanese soldier dead and several guerrillas wounded. The Beirut statement said exchanges remain active, with Israeli incursions increasing since Wednesday. In Cairo, Egyptian sources linked Brezhnev’s postponed Middle East trip to Kremlin leadership tensions over detente and U.S. policy, signaling broader Soviet-Cairo strain.
Recreation Commission votes to close the Community Recreation Center from June 1 to August 30 1975 for budget relief. Director Roger Goodnow says the move saves about 12 to 13 thousand dollars but net savings fall to roughly 7 800 after adding outdoor pool improvements and cited low summer attendance. Commissioners LaCroix Luther Tomasi Lyons Carroll vote yes Merunowicz no Le Meaux abstain.

Wilington Raymon Poor of Whitingham was selected by Bennington and Windham county GOP committees to succeed Rep elect John T. Carrier who died before taking office. Poor, in his 60s, is a former Whitingham selectman and longtime carrier ally. The vote was 10 to 4 over Kenalene J. Collins with 14 members voting. Governor Salmon pledged to name a Republican to fill the seat in District Bennington Windham.
