Jet detour to Cuba ends with hijack calm in Havana

Eastern Air Lines Flight 950 with 111 passengers and eight crew was hijacked to Havana after a 23-year old man identifying as Peter Alvarez demanded asylum. Stewardess Susanne O Connor described the hijacker as a blond, 23 year old with a divorced Miami wife and two children in Miami. He said he lived in San Juan and returned to Cuba to see his sick father. A 250 pound professional wrestler and a 300 pound hijacker with a gun faced down the crisis, the wrestler blocking further action. The plane landed in Havana about 11 am EST and was released five hours later. The Cubans allowed passengers to return on the same jet. Captain William C Latimer said Cuban authorities offered no explanation for the leniency.

Congressmen Challenge Nixon Bank Regulation Plan

Washington lawmakers oppose the Nixon administration move to regulate banks and holding companies. The plan would require one bank holding companies to register and split enforcement among three agencies. Critics say the 1956 law remains too weak for firms with under 25 percent of a bank’s stock. Chairman Wright Patman announces a congressional probe into rapid growth of unregulated holding entities.
