Backyard pigs prove homegrown bacon worth the effort
A writer recalls raising two pigs in a suburban yard during the 1970s oil crisis. After months of feeding and labor, 100 pounds of meat were produced at under 90 cents per pound, with pork hams and bacons smoked in Hyannis. The piece notes a broader trend of backyard livestock as education and hobby, though costly and labor intensive.
