Captain Francis Jones Receives Purple Heart for Vietnam Action
Capt. Francis S. Jones, son of Bennington residents, was officially cited April 2 and awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during a theater bombing in Saigon. He endured a nearby explosion at Capitol Kinh Do Theater in mid-February while watching a film, praising a Marine captain’s warning that saved many lives. Jones served in Viet Nam from 1964 to January 1965 and arrived at Fort Lewis in March. Also cited was Sgt. Robert E. Lovelace of Lakewood for Air Medal flights supporting supply missions.
