Spectacular East End Fire Destroys 15 Dwellings
A major Sunday blaze on H Street in the East End destroyed 15 dwellings and outbuildings. The fire, which started in a Gratzer property outbuilding, spread through the alley toward John B. Malott’s home, damaging several houses and garages. Fire crews, aided by scarce water pressure and quick bucket brigades, fought flames for nearly thirty minutes as roofs collapsed and furniture was removed to safety. Police and residents recovered some money found in two containers, while a number of buildings sustained heavy damage or were ruined.
