Northbound Monon work train spotted a barrel of whiskey on the right of way at Sandpit south of the city. The barrel was taken to the depot and thieves likely rolled it from a freight car but fled before escaping. The incident echoes previous liquor thefts near the city, which led to a conviction and a lull in trouble.
Miss Esther Mayer was guest of honor at a Wednesday afternoon indoor picnic hosted by friends at Miss Dorothy Trainor's West 15th street home. The event served as a farewell before Mayer departs for Bloomington to begin her new life. Participants included Miss Anal Webb Aileen Mitchell Florence Ismery and Mars Gain.
Message from this city announces the death of Edward Trinkle brother of Bert Trinkle of the Standish farm area. Fireman on the Iowa Central railway, he is believed to have been killed in a wreck. Born near Fredericksburg, his body will be brought home for burial. He was married and had lived in Iowa for years.
Mrs Javachonke, mother of Mrs Charles Ebert of th and f streets, who fell into an open sewer and was feared fatally hurt, is improving after several days, with doctors hopeful for full recovery.
Will Wood, accidentally shot by his brother nearly three weeks ago, is recovering rapidly and may sit up by early next week if no complications arise. Ade remains quiet to let the bullet in the abdominal area stabilize to avoid future trouble. Mrs. Will Lindley of Cincinnati visits her father in Hay Cottage, and Miss Thuswelda Furst returns from Chicago with a guest.

Mr. Lemon plans to return after a Texas trip.
The School Board and Stone Club discussed creating a vocational drafting department at the high school and a night school for architectural and mechanical drawing. A private instructor would cost an estimated 1500 to 2000 dollars yearly, with clubs covering much of the expense. A committee will study the proposal and meet the board to shape a formal plan.
William France a miner at Brazil is charged as the first arson suspect by the new state fire marshal team. He allegedly set fire to his mother in law Mrs Phoebe Sims home early Tuesday June 10 fire marshal investigation followed a drunkenness charge that day later dropped with arson affidavit filed by deputy Roger W Wallace France and his wife had separated and she stayed with her mother after threats to burn the house.
Mr and Mrs J G Emery left Thursday for Cincinnati Columbus and other places in Ohio. They will also attend the Gettysburg reunion before returning home.
Mrs. Lucy A. Hendricks aged 68 died Wednesday at 2 30 p m after a prolonged paralysis illness. She lived with her daughter in law on South G Street. She was mother of Herschel Sharp who was killed previously as chief of the local fire department. The remains were moved to Salem and the funeral and burial will be held there Friday.

The Senate met at 9 o clock and continued lobby investigations extending to Judge Lovett s railroad charges. The Finance Committee finished tariff schedule work with two provisions pending. Foreign Relations favorably reported Thomas Nelson Page as ambassador to Italy and other diplomatic nominations. The House was not in session and meets Friday.
