Why Indiana State University Was Placed at Bloomington
Bloomington, Ind. January 14 Ernest ae unveils a study tracing the 1820 siting of Indiana State University to Jonathan Lindley of North Carolina through his land holdings and influence. Lindley helped choose Bloomington as a seat of learning amid early Orange County conditions and a lack of white settlers in Bloomington. He chaired a 1816 committee on campus location with Madison approval, tying the decision to his vision for education and regional development. Also noted are travels and social updates from local residents including the Lindley era and contemporary residents Bart Williams, Ruth, and Mrs Clara Conner returning to Shoals connections.
