Southern Indiana and Illinois suffer severe floods as Wabash and White rivers breach embankments. New Harmony is inundated with five to six feet of water in streets. Mt. Vernon and Hazelton faces rail and road damage, looting reports, and mass evacuations. Rawling Bridge Settled Back One Inch In Line
The old Rawlins bridge, built 1832 33 and costing 1258 15, had one end lift from its foundation but settled back within an inch of its former position as the creek fell. A. K. Sears’ cable anchoring saved it from destruction, though repairs are needed after the end arches washed out. It will be several days before the bridge can be used again.
