Wets filed a petition with 423 names asking the Board of Commissioners to call a liquor local option election. If approved, the election must be held 20 to 30 days after the board action, likely in May, with the Drys having filed remonstrances against licenses.
A letter from Peru recounts floods driving families from their home as water rose to the second story. Refugees from Peru include Mr. and Mrs. Robertson who reached New Albany and plan to travel to their city soon. Gene Broady's sister in Peru reports the emergency.
The breach of promise suit of Mrs. Yude Young against John Chambers, a farmer near Harrodsburg, has been compromised and dismissed.
Mrs Flora Payne Hoke formerly of Horseshoe Bloomington is identified as the large woman rescued by Willard Farr from Bean Blossom creek floods last week. Hoke weighing 412 pounds was carried by skiff from the flooded home to a neighbor’s house as water stood several feet in the residence north of town.
Estimates of flood damage to Indiana railroads run up to about 10 million dollars though officials lack full reports. Bridges and grades were washed out across extensive stretches with costly replacements. Big Four lines near Indianapolis suffered heavy losses and a month delay for Chicago division traffic. Temporary structures and pilings sped up some reopenings as railroads raced to restore service.
Dr. Franklin C. McCoy filed for divorce from Essie McCoy in Lawrence circuit court alleging a violent temper and repeated interference with his professional duties. The marriage dated September 28 1909 ended with separation in March 1918 and authorities note the defendant left to seek other company.
Two blind street musicians, strangers in town, were able to locate a dispensary and obtain alcohol after raids and police court convictions. They were released without paying a fine due to their condition, drawing amusement from authorities and residents the next morning.
Evansville Ind April 2 The Ohio river rises over Water street and may flood business districts by morning. Stage at 6 pm 47.7 feet, forecast to reach 48 by noon tomorrow. Flood surpasses 1884 level of 47.82, with high winds and backwater from the Wabash and Green rivers. City crews work to protect homes as flood waters advance.
Dr. Bullett of Lawrenceport says water stood twelve feet higher than ever before at that point. All high water marks must be changed according to the Mitchell Tribune.
The Southeastern Line opened for all traffic from Terre Haute to Surprise with service as nearly on schedule as track conditions allow. Work trains continue temporary repairs along the line and trains may run into Seymour from Terre Haute by Friday or Saturday.
Elisha Johnson who died at Koleen will be buried at Green Hill. The service is at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from Miss Lizzie Cline's residence at 15th and R streets. The G. A. R. will conduct the burial.
Indications Thursday pointed to the Western Union construction crew reaching the city that afternoon to continue telegraph line work. The local office has been unable to send messages over its own wires for days and has moved business to other wires while awaiting restoration.
B and Q agent Charles G Malott received a telegram from headquarters to rush about five carloads of bridge timbers from Bedford yards to Mitchell via the Monon. He supervised the loading in a strenuous day. Wes Bilyeu of Indianapolis is visiting the city with relatives and friends.
Louisville reports the Ohio River cresting near 45 feet with a rapid decline forecast. Officials warn many dwellings in Shippingport and on the Point may not be habitable again while Federal aid and river supply deliveries continue. Weather outlook predicts continued storms and fluctuating temperatures through mid April with potential tornadoes.
Indianapolis faces widespread flood disaster with 3000 families losing all or part of their furnishings. The General Relief Committee seeks hundreds of thousands of dollars for immediate aid and cleanup, launching popular subscriptions and designated collection sites. State leaders request Red Cross inquiry as Terre Haute Peru and Logansport seek aid.
Lillian Moore the infant daughter of Mrs Alta Moore was adopted by Mr and Mrs R F Davis after authorities moved her to Bedford Italy was taking her to Bedford when the mother identified the child. Judge Hughes finalized the adoption papers this morning. Greencastle Herald.
Mrs. Kate Culhan District Deputy received word from Liz Arbuckle of Terre Haute that the district meetings have new dates. The district meet now occurs in Mary 23 in the city, replacing the previously postponed Friday evening session.
