Court clears way for OConnor contempt trial
The Supreme Court this week cleared the way for Harvey O Connor, a Fort Worth CIO Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers official, to be tried on a contempt charge for defying Senate questions. The ruling parallels the Emspek Barte Quinn dispute about witness protections under the Fifth and First Amendments, potentially reshaping congressional investigations and witness rights. If O Connor is convicted or acquitted, the case could reach the Supreme Court, influencing how self incrimination and witness protections are applied in future inquiries.
