Jail staffing push aims to meet state inmate ratio

Chambers County commissioners approved hiring two more jailers after an April vote to fix the 1-to-48 jailer-to-inmate ratio amid an average 120 inmates. Gentry students reach state competition in history fair

Seven seventh and eight graders from Gentry Junior School advanced from the Regional History Fair at Lee College to compete in Austin for the state title. ExxonMobil contract ties four day week to one time pay rise

About 900 refinery workers approved the deal in April while 300 chemical plant workers rejected it and issued a 60 day strike notice. Clerical workers, largely women, plan talks with Exxon officials and will rally at a Baytown meeting to press for wage gains and prevent layoffs. ExxonMobil, Baytowns largest employer with 6200 employees and contractors, says clerical pay is 1.62 percent above comparable roles while workers claim 7 percent below.

Lawmakers clash over proposed landfill near Galveston Bay

U S Court of Appeals in New Orleans heard the case Tuesday as opponents from Chambers Harris Liberty counties and several cities including Baytown Beach City and the Galveston Bay Foundation fight a permit for a 23.9 million cubic yard industrial waste site on Highway 99 and Fisher Road.
