Nixon at Odds Over EEOC Chairman Nominee
Washington AP reports Senator Dirksen opposes William H. Brown as EEOC chair citing enforcement concerns and potential shift toward quasi judicial powers. Brown, 39, Philadelphia Republican, would replace Clifford L. Alexander Jr. amid a larger push by Nixon to strengthen EEOC authority. Opposition from Dirksen and Southern Democrats could imperil confirmation. Brown shares Alexander’s race but faces decisive Senate resistance.
