Baytown area weather outlook remains mostly cloudy and mild through Friday with scattered showers. Temperatures Thursday range mid 60s to near 80 while Morgan's Point tides show highs around 1:30 am and 4:49 pm with lows near 3:37 pm.
Susan Clayton daughter of Shelly and Mrs Clayton of 601 E Republic will take part in the East Texas Spelling Bee televised on Channel 8 Saturday morning. Her mother Johnnie is a The Sun receptionist. Several local names are cited in light notices and social mentions including Tommy Brewer back from Vietnam, Judy Burnett wedding plans, Mary Travis with a new car, and Dallas Holmes promoting a Lee College production of Guys and Dolls.
Austin AP House Senate negotiators plan another session as leaders pursue a tax-avoiding one-year budget. The conference on a 5.7 billion general appropriation bill began after tense debates over judges pay raises. Gov. Preston Smith Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes and Speaker Gus Mutscher weighed public remarks on the two-year vs annual budget stance shaped by former Gov. Connally. Senator Schwartz, sidelined by back treatment, opposes more funds for judges and could swing a tie vote on a 2 thousand dollar raise for appellate judges.
In Austin AP reports the state minimum wage bill, already cleared by the Senate, leaves the House committee and heads to the House floor where an effort to gut it by exempting agricultural workers is anticipated. The House version keeps several exemptions and sets wage scales with phased increases for nonagricultural workers. The committee also backed creating the Texas Conservation Foundation, forming an interagency natural resources council, standardizing law enforcement training, and other measures.
Europe marks May Day with subdued displays in Communist capitals and tense actions in the West. Moscow hides military hardware while Prague boosts police. British workers strike. Paris bans the parade. A Black autoworkers group challenges UAW leadership and pushes company demands. Catholic priests consider optional celibacy or marriage. Agnew urges GOP backing for Safeguard deployment.
The Robert E. Lee High School band earned its fourth consecutive Sweepstakes Award in the Region IX Interscholastic League concert contest at Deer Park. Judges praised the band for all divisions: marching, concert, and sight reading, marking a history as the region’s largest 4A group with 22 bands competing. The symphonic band directed by Charles E. Forque and the concert band under Donald H. Muery also competed, noting first division sight reading in consecutive years and strong performances throughout.
Lee College students will stage a fundraiser at Baytown intersections to support the Lee College Foundation Scholarship Fund. Under campus club leadership, volunteers aim for 1500 dollars, part of a 20000 dollar foundation goal, with many fraternities and sororities contributing to the effort.
In Red Square Brezhnev opened a historic May Day address without a prior military display signaling a shift after the invasion of Czechoslovakia. He spoke as defense minister role was omitted and NATO ambassadors attended the event, a change from past celebrations.
The Texas House approved House Bill 328 to establish a three year upper division Bayport College serving six Gulf Coast junior colleges. The proposal envisions a nine regent state supported coeducational institution near Houston with a site bounded by Highway 145 NASA Road 1 I 45 and Spencer Highway.
Ross Sterling High School will stage Brigadoon on Friday and Saturday with help from the music, speech, drama, crafts, choir and band departments. Cast includes Rodney Woods as Tommy Albright and Debbie Davison as Fiona MacLaren. Curtain at 8 p.m. both nights. tickets at the door for all ages.
The Central Baytown Business and Professional Association will install new Texas Avenue decorations for 1969 at an estimated cost of $5,000 plus. They plan to sell the old decorations and launch three downtown promotions yearly in July October and February. Joe Butrick chaired the meeting at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce.
Barbecue dinner and festival set for Sunday at St Jude's Catholic Church on South Main in Highlands starting 11 a.m. Adult plates cost 1.25 and children 50 cents.
Attorneys general from several states organized a drive to establish uniform tidelands rights for all coastal states and extend them beyond the three mile limit. A subcommittee of three attorneys general will draft legislation to present to every coastal state. The spokesman said the aim is nationwide uniform rights beyond three miles.
Baytown Parks and Recreation will stage the Spring Edition of Recreation Review at 7 p.m. Friday in the Community Building auditorium at the Civic Center. The event closes the spring dance and baton sessions with over 400 participants in 27 acts featuring dance and baton routines.
Baytown Housing Authority moves to obtain federal rental subsidies from HUD Fort Worth to house more than 100 families with four bedroom units. Chairman Herbert Campbell says only four such units exist locally and plans three to five year leases while awaiting HUD approval. Call Mrs Miriam Turner at 427-4327 with rental offers.
Wanda Orton recalls Nora Lois Pryor known as Aunt Nora since 1936. For four decades she led Baptist Sunday School for toddlers, teaching with love, flowers, and Bible verses. She valued children and sought to spread God’s word through quiet, caring guidance.
