Bids on five school remodeling projects were opened Tuesday with Meyerson Construction Co. of Houston submitting the lowest lump sum at 820000, about 44000 under the next bid from Gene B. Hazelwood of Baytown and 64000 under Epca Constructors of Houston. Work spans Baytown Cedar Bayou Horace Mann and Lamar and Sam Houston Elementary Schools, with bond allocations just under 790000. A separate bid by Comex of Pasadena covered two elementary projects at 155800. Officials and Architect James A Bitsy Davis will study bids before presenting a contract recommendation to the school board, as the district nears completion of its 7.7 million building program, with a library at Baytown Junior School to be bid later.
The Baytown area weather forecast calls for partly cloudy to cloudy skies and mild conditions through Thursday. Wednesday temperatures are expected to range in the 60s to low 40s, with Morgan's Point tides showing a high at 1 31 a.m. and a low at 12 07 a.m.
The Leaaute passed and sent to the governor a Monday holiday bill sponsored by Rep. Bot Armstrong and Sen. Charles Herring of Austin. The bill moves several holidays to the Monday nearest and would begin in 1971 with Washington's Birthday on the third Monday of February Memorial Day on the last Monday in May Columbus Day and another October Monday pattern Labor Day remains first Monday. About 100 people attended Harlem Elementary School open house led by Principal Arthur Coltharp to inspect facilities and learn about a new program for next fall. The district invites more parents to tour Harlem Thursday and May 10 to June 10 is the enrollment window. Leaders outlined a non graded continuous progress system with an enriched curriculum, programmed instruction, special art and music including stringed instruments and team teaching. Deputy superintendents Herring and Nettles discussed the plan and staff planning, noting openings for teachers inside and outside the district.
AP report notes an Xchange executive stating Wall Street's paperwork problem has not been eliminated but is under control while President Nixon warns that government paralysis grows with more federal aid programs. Ambassador Walsh accuses Viet Cong and North Vietnamese of obstinacy amid Paris talks. Fort Polk officials deny access to a civil rights group probing alleged discrimination. Two Texas constitutional proposals sit with a House subcommittee, unlikely to reach voters. Baylor College of Medicine seeks review of eye transplant operation by Dr. Moore.
Glen Walker a singer minister and businessman wins Baytown mayoral runoff over Albert Fanestiel by 652 votes. Total turnout 5 087. Walker secures 2 869 votes across eight of eleven precincts while Fanestiel gains 2 217. Walker to take oath May 7 and assume duties as mayor.
President Nixon calls on college administrations to confront campus unrest and not yield to lawless acts. He presses boards, faculties, and trustees to act decisively when students threaten others, steal files, or bring weapons, warning that free education requires backbone to oppose violence.
The San Jacinto TR and Respiratory Diseases Association operate a Mobile X-Ray Unit in Baytown through May. Adults pay 1.50 and students 1, with no one under 12 X-rayed. Baytown officials and a police association committee debated police pay at city hall. Councilman Kloesel pressed for questions before recommendations, while Sgt Deel urged discussion of money and competitive salaries to attract talent from Pasadena and Houston. Pay scales discussed include starting salaries around 600 and toping at 700 with self-improvement paths.
Lee College Regent E. Lil Gunn was elected to the National Association of Community College Boards Administrative Council for a three year term. The Miami appointment follows an April 14 meeting of college representatives. Gunn, a retired Esso researcher with 26 years service, holds BA and MA from the University of Texas. He is active in the Lions Club chamber of commerce and scouts. The association aims to foster workshops assist community colleges especially on federal funding, craft national legislation, and pursue outside funds for a three year development plan.
Dallas report says Dr. Clyde W. Spear a Baytown dentist received a Sh year award from the Texas Dental Association. He practiced in Crosby for two years and has spent the last 48 years in Baytown. Colleagues noted his long service and local impact.
