Bayshore Club president questions dredging rule adequacy
Bayshore Rod, Reel and Gun Club President Jack Walker on Friday said the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission ruling to ban shell dredging within a half mile of shorelines offers little extra protection to many oyster reefs in Galveston Trinity Bay. He noted reefs beyond a half mile and reefs in deeper water may remain vulnerable while the rule moves dredging limits from 300 feet to half a mile and bans dredging in shallow nursery waters. Walker cited reefs such as Fisher's Reef and Redfish Bar Complex and discussed potential impact in Matagorda Bay and East Bay. He tied the timing to legislative activity as lawmakers consider multiple dredging bills and possible reef protections.
