TWIA buys $636 million reinsurance protection
The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association has purchased 636 million in reinsurance to cover losses beyond 1.6 billion from its catastrophe reserve and bonds. The deal, directed by the TWIA board on May 20, 2011, costs just under 100 million and runs June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. It was brokered by Guy Carpenter & Company with 47 reinsurers. TWIA serves as wind and hail insurer of last resort for 14 coastal counties and parts of Harris County and promotes hurricane safety and coastal building codes.
