Closing arguments set Monday in Jean murder trial
In Houston the defense challenged claims of sexual assault by Joseph Francois Jean against two girls while prosecutors pressed the murder theory. Defense lawyers Graber and Gaiser left the homicide charge largely untouched as DNA witness Kupferschmid disputed the genetic material found in the victims. The trial enters its ninth day with intense questioning from Harris County prosecutors.

City council sets redistricting standards in Baytown
Baytown City Council moved quickly through a short agenda Thursday night. A public hearing on water and wastewater impact fees drew no speakers as the council raised the maximum fees but kept current charges. The council also approved redistricting criteria based on the 2010 census, hiring a consultant to redraw districts with DOJ approval required after map adoption. Chief Manager Bob Leiper noted federal guidelines demand roughly equal district populations.
