Laundry costs drop with self service coin op machines
Doris Myers, former extension home management specialist, says a household can wash fewer than five loads weekly using self service coin operated laundries. Costs per pound are down from about 2.5 cents a pound ten years ago to roughly 1.5 cents now with newer, larger equipment. For dry cleaning, self service can save several dollars per eight pound load, though some stains remain challenging depending on fabric and age. Spotting spray aids water soluble soils, but some cases require professional chemical treatment.
