Sterling School Board Cuts Plan For Ross Sterling Shops

Budget pressures force Sterling ISD to trim the Ross Sterling vocational and industrial shops addition and rebid about 100000 in overruns. Board rejects last bids and removes classrooms and offices, plans new bids for wood trades machine welding auto shops and cosmetology space, plus readvertises for district wide educational TV antennas and routes. Pipeline adjustments at Pumphrey Elementary are authorized with cost Ongoing. United Gas offers to perform work free. Extension of bidding for Baytown Junior School library and Act addition noted.

Wahrmund Won't Seek Re election To School Board

Trustee Bob Wahrmund announced he will not seek another term on the school board next fall. He declined to serve as an alternate delegate to the Texas School Board Association meeting in September, stating he is up for re election but not running. Wahrmund was elected in 1966 and his term was extended. current president Mrs Karl W Opryshek will attend the association meeting with no alternate chosen.

La Porte residents demand action over leaking gas

Residents of La Porte Texas urged officials to stop a suspected leaking gas that sickened an undetermined number of people on the south side. Children were affected and a German shepherd went paralyzed after exposure. Mayor Pfeiffer said about half nearby chemical plants had taken safety steps and the rest would within nine days. Phosgene gas, once used in WWI, was among the substances produced in the area.

New Baytown Firm Is Hired By School Board

The Baytown school board voted 4-3 to replace Reid Strickland Gillette Ramsey with Stewart and Park, ending about 40 years of service from the old firm. J Milton Stewart and Richard W Park, both in their late twenties, form the new partnership and begin a one year district contract July 1. Mrs. Karl W. Opryshek cast the deciding vote, with Fabian Greenwell backing the move and others opposing.

Mont Belvieu and Baytown began toll free calls after Mayor J B Gill placed the first call to Baytown Councilman Donnie Hullum. Wallisville Price Daniel Leads Texans to Washington

Former Gov Price Daniel led a Texas delegation to Washington to lobby Senate and House committees for Liberty and Chambers County projects.
