Baytown police investigated a robbery at Holiday Food Store 1101 Alexander early Sunday. A female employee reported the robber forced her to lie on the floor while he emptied the cash register of an undetermined amount of money.
Around town diners recount a Stallworth gathering with Jack Kraft greeting Wade and Harriet Glenn. Ex-Ganders Norman Adams Herbie Gray L.A. Bergeron Dr Joe Ed McLemore and others attend, with James Carnes James Walmsley Bud Reilly and Cecil Sutphin among the notable arrivals.
Gov Bill Daniel brings about 8 500 disabled children to Liberty County Plantation Ranch for the 15th annual Crippled Children's Ranch Party. The five hour program featured Sid Lasher as MC, Paul Boesch assisting, and entertainment by the Huntsville Prison Band, Roy Rogers band, and other stars. Attendance included children from Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana. The event showcased Gov Daniel’s White Charger Jr with a 5000 dollar saddle, a barbecue from plantation wagons, and thousands of treats and gifts. Parachutists and jet flyovers added to the day, with participation from U S Air Force Delta Dagger jets and paratroopers. Former Gov Price Daniel also attended.
Australian Adm. G J B Crabb refused to say if comms problems occurred between the carrier Melbourne and destroyer Evans before they collided off South Vietnam. He testified before a joint U.S.-Australian board, noting the Evans suffered 74 deaths and Crabb described the collision as a ghastly sight. He also warned officers that escort destroyers must not turn toward a carrier when changing course.
A Liberty-Chambers Counties Navigation District delegation led by Price Daniel will testify before the House public works subcommittee in Washington this week on Cedar Bayou improvements for navigation. Ground broken Monday for a second Weingarten supermarket in Baytown to be built beside Gibson's 1800 N Alexander Dr. The 45000 square foot facility will be owned by Gibson's and leased to Weingarten's with a shared parking lot. The project aims for expansion in the shopping center and keeps the Albert Thomas Circle store open.
In Washington the Senate faced a likely vote today on Warren E Burger to become chief justice. Leaders moved to finish confirmation, after a slow start, marking the first high court leadership change in 16 years. Kennedy asked for a roll call though no opposition was reported. Nixon had announced the selection 19 days earlier. Dirksen pressed to speed the process.
Houston officials reported 150000 to 200000 visitors on the first official day as the 110 million Intercontinental Airport opened. Demand overflowed parking areas and trains were crowded, delaying transfers and causing buses to reroute. The airport plans four terminals and aims for four million annual travelers.
Abe and Dorothy Rosenzweig reflect on 50 years in Baytown retail as they close their familiar Economy and Town and Country store at 214 W. Texas. The couple recalls early days, longtime employees, and Baytown’s boom era from Richmond arrival in 1927 to Mrs. Rosenzweig’s role in women’s fashions.

Sgt James A Wilson Jr 21 son of Mr and Mrs J A Wilson Rt 1 Box 197 has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal with V Device for valor in Vietnam He is with Co B 4th Battalion 31st Infantry 196th Infantry Brigade The citation notes his actions on 23 November 1968 near Nohn Trach where he assaulted a fortified bunker with grenades and later killed an enemy soldier providing cover to extract a comrade His heroism saved lives and reflected credit on the US Army He graduated from Robert E Lee and was drafted in November 1967 now serving as platoon sergeant in Vietnam
