Ads Hit Record High in 1954 National Spending
Advertising on a national basis reached a record year in 1954 with outlays of 504 million dollars, down slightly from 1953's 601 million. General Motors topped the list for the eighth straight year, boosting its budget to 37.39 million while Ford and Chrysler trailed. Monsanto Chemical made the biggest rise, leaping 42.6 percent to 4.10 million and moving from 53rd to 12th. The top 100 advertisers accounted for roughly half the total, with autos remaining the largest single ad category and radio TV ad decline noted. Oklahoma City grand jury sidetracked plans to quiz former Gov. Johnston Murray, who was reportedly in Texas.

Pentagon eyes faster B 32 and fighter jet production
Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson said officials are studying boosting the jet bomber program and accelerating orders for jet fighters. No decision on enlarging the B 52 fleet will be made until the next budget. Additional planes would come after about 500 already planned, reflecting shifts since the May Russian air progress statement. Senate and House pressure pushes funding and procurement adjustments for the air force.
