Detroit AP reports first half car sales near 1955 boom pace despite Ford stoppage. January–June totals hit 3,446,563 versus 4,519,629 in 1955. Ford and American Motors showed gains over 1961. Oldsmobile up 43 percent over 1961.
The Associated Press reports growing prosperity as Texas banks posted record midyear deposits. Houston led with 2.72 billion, Dallas hit 2.89 billion, and multiple cities including San Angelo Victoria San Antonio and Beaumont set new highs. County and city totals rose, signaling broad economic strength despite stock market declines.
Beta lBaxtown Emergency Corps and Sigma Phi sponsor a fish fry with free boat rides at the Bay shore. Rod Reel and Gun Club dinner Friday July 27 at Volunteer Fireman’s Hall on Lee Drive. Robert L. Gillette won ders with four inch letters, nine stolen from his firm’s 105 Gaillard sign valued at 75 dollars. Baytown items include fishing plans, hospital stay for Grover Edge, a Bayshore Rod Reef and Gun Club fish fry, bridge news, education convention notes, and a birthday.
The Commerce Department approved a change to where the Weather Bureau will obtain official readings from a new observer in Mell Michigan. The town purchased the equipment and will provide the official data going forward.
J M Gross of Houston announced a second Country Club Manor style apartment project on Decker Drive at the city west limits. Five acres will hold four masonry buildings with two floors each, eight units per building, totaling about 48 apartments costing around 300000 for construction and furnishing. An additional swimming pool is planned and the project will begin by August 1.
Plans call for opening the apartments by November 1 with site investigations into rental spaces after construction begins within weeks. The developers have similar projects in Houston Corpus Christi Beaumont and seek other favorable sites.
Two Oklahoma ASCS officials Louis Dumas and Arthur Stone confessed to accepting 1640.80 dollars from a Billie Sol Estes agent for information aiding Estes. They admitted lying on taxes and sought to resign, but were suspended by Agriculture Secretary Freeman. The disclosures widen congressional probes into Estes related to cotton acreage transfers and farm aid schemes.
Baytown residents learn meter colors to gauge parking time. Blue ten hour meters accept quarters or nickels, penny meters red front the main post office on Defee, and all other one and two hour meters are silver. Traffic committee notes color scheme aids memory of meter types.
Southern Pacific Railroad Co. will lease 4.42 acres west of Carver High School to the city for use as a park for Oak Addition residents at a cost of $1 per year. City Manager J B LeFevre said SP is ready to execute the lease. The council deferred action on parking meters for East Texas Avenue pending budget studies. Meter installation is estimated at $33,000. The council referred a request to clean the Woodlawn drainage ditch to Commissioners Court. Mayor Al Clayton appointed Councilman Jack Huron to the economics committee. The charter amendment study was proposed, with planning committee reactivation discussed. Council members noted issues for the charter and planning panels. (Playground, Page 2).
Sponsors of President Kennedy s social security health care plan for the elderly predicted it would pass the Senate by next Wednesday or Thursday. They gained confidence after a voice vote defeat of a Republican substitute in the first voting test despite only about 15 senators present. The plan would raise the minimum Social Security retirement by using general revenues to finance federal payments for private health insurance premiums for persons over 65 and increase the annual base from 4800 to 5200.
AP reports the Indian Air Force Canberra wreckage found near Aurangabad ten miles northeast of Bombay. Some crew reportedly survived as the cross country night flight ended in disaster. In Virginia, two cars collided head on at Crest of Oulls Mountain, eight dead, five instantly, three dying en route to hospital.

Washington AP Secretary Robert McNamara said the United States has not ruled out striking Russian cities in a nuclear war if it serves national interests. He stressed a flexible strategy aimed at destroying enemy military forces rather than civilians, warning Moscow that U S retaliation could target Soviet targets if a threat to Europe or allies materializes. McNamara noted the force remains capable of absorbing a first strike and surviving to punish the enemy, while acknowledging ambiguity in the phrasing may have raised questions about spare the cities goals. He also said Communist guerrilla effectiveness in South Vietnam has declined but warned the war could take years to resolve.
