Cane Scrutiny: Key Defends Sam Houston in 1832 Fallout

A dramatic account imagines Francis Scott Key defending Sam Houston in an 1832 assault case in Washington. Houston, enraged by Congressman William Stanbery, struck him with a cane. Stanbery’s pistol misfired, and Houston’s friends pulled him away. Stanbery was wounded, Houston was tried, found guilty but reprimanded. Stanbery was also found guilty, fined 500 dollars in city court, and President Andrew Jackson pardoned Houston. Wanda Orton notes.
