Water and Wells In Baytown Runoff Strains System

Baytown reports 13 water wells pumping nine million gallons daily this week, topping the prior all time high of seven and a half million. Officials caution that distribution limits and low storage tanks cause localized pressure issues. If any wells fail, shortages could occur near those wells, with peak demand after 4:30 p.m. as residents water lawns.

Four-Year Water Works Project Nearing Completion

ALAN McWHORTER reports a four year water works program will finish within Baytown city limits linking the Tri cities area with Lakewood Brownwood and Cedar Bayou through large asbestos cement mains. Two contracts total about 1.2 million dollars with Bayshore Constructors Inc and Whitelab Inc of Houston installing several 16 and 12 inch lines to boost fire protection and allow phased well shut downs. Completion will enable water to be moved across the city from multiple directions in emergencies and reduce disruption during line work.

Humble to solicit bids for 12 story Decker Drive tower

Humble Oil and Refining Co will receive bids by 2 p.m. July 3 for a 12 story office tower on a 23 acre Decker Drive site in Baytown. Neuhaus and Taylor are architects. The building will house about 1000 employees and cover roughly 312 thousand square feet. Construction is slated to take about two years as part of a $20 million investment, with Rollingbrook development plans also announced along Decker Drive.

Baytown bond money goes toward a new city hall and sewers

This Baytown series details the 1965 bond issue. The new city hall, completed in 1967, offers a council chamber for 150, a drive in water and tax window, and space for city attorney and planner. Sterling High bids on vocational shop within bond funds

Sterling High School district received four bids Wednesday for a new vocational shop complex as part of a 1967 bond issue, within the $325,000 allocation after the board trimmed four classrooms and two admin offices. Hazelwood Construction Co. led with 298,683, followed by Marshall Construction Co. 109,500, Baxter Construction Co. 700, and Free Construction Co. 314,000, amid other bids for additions to the Administration Building and a Baytown Junior School library.

Enjay Plant Manager Gillis to Transfer to New York Post

Enjay Chemical Co announces Gene Gillis will move to Esso Chemical in New York to head plans coordination and analysis division and serve as secretary to the management committee. He assumes duties August 4. Replacing him at Baytown is R. L. Grandy. Gillis has led Baytown operations since 1965 and is active in local affairs.
