First To Speak With Artificial Larynx
In Boston a marine wounded in a Viet Cong ambush speaks again after a two stage operation at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary that replaces a shattered larynx with a skin grafted airway device. Lance Cpl. Walter Lopata greeted reporters with Hello, how are you, marking the first spoken words since his injury. Doctors led by Dr. William W Montgomery call the result a complete success and say future use depends on further study. An estimated 6 000 cancer patients lose their voices yearly.
